Redknapps give Thomas Cook a summer lift

The success of a TV campaign featuring the former footballer Jamie Redknapp and his wife Louise, the former pop star, has helped lift Thomas Cook’s summer sales during the peak January booking period. Meanwhile pre-tax losses for the quarter ending 31 December narrowed to £81.5m from £112m year-on-year.

Thomas Cook is in advanced talks to acquire businesses in China and Russia as it expands into emerging markets. Manny Fontenla-Novoa, chief executive, said a deal in Russia was now “very close” that after several months of searching for the right partners. He also said he hoped to agree a purchase in China in the first quarter of 2010.

Thomas Cook’s share price climbed 7p to 253p after creditor banks for insolvent German retailer Arcandor completed the placing of a 43.9 percent stake in travel firm, in one of the biggest share placings in Britain in recent years.
