Low cost African airline FastJet has confirmed it will have its first airbase in Tanzania. The airline will commence flying in November with seats going on sale online a few weeks earlier. Fares will be available from $20 one-way excluding taxes and charges.

Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou is planning to launch a new budget airline branded ‘Fastjet’ that will rival easyJet.

Stelios Haji-Ioannou plans to delay the floatation of easyBus till at least 2012, despite the company making a profit for the fist time last year. The Greek-Cypriot billionaire said he was in “no hurry to float” the airport transfer business despite its improving figures, and would instead prefer to grow profits and cashflow first.

easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou is calling an emergency meeting of shareholders this week in a bid to stop the budget carrier’s “overzealous” expansion plans. The call comes as the airline’s new boss has hinted a third party will be called in to review the company’s business model.

Stelios, who recently resigned as a director but remains a significant shareholder, is suing easyJet over allegedly overstepping a brand licensing agreement.

The acrimonious departure of Stelios Haji-Ioannou from easyJet’s board could lead to the low-cost carrier dropping the word “easy” from its name. The airline has already drawn up contingency plans if it cannot find a resolution to the bitter dispute with the founder.
