Obama swims in the Gulf to back tourism
Barack Obama has waded into the debate over whether it is safe to swim in the Gulf of Mexico following the BP oil disaster by taking his nine-year-old daughter for a swim whilst on a family trip to the Florida resort of Panama City.
BP ‘static kill’ operation a success
BP has confirmed a ‘static kill’ operation has sealed the Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. However, with the latest estimates suggesting some 4.9 million barrels of oil may have been spilled, the British company faces a long battle to repair the damage caused by what is now officially the worst maritime spill ever.
400,000 travel jobs and $22.7bn – the cost of the BP oil spill
Up to 400,000 travel industry jobs could be lost as a result of the BP oil disaster, according to the U.S. Travel Association. The organisation has also put the cost of the spill at $22.7 billion and and taking three years to recover, based on the aftermath of 25 recent natural and man-made disasters.
BP relief well delayed by Tropical Storm
Officials in the United States have confirmed efforts to permanently stop the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico following the BP Deepwater Horizon explosion could be delayed by up to two weeks by Tropical Storm Bonnie. Ships involved in the operation are being moved to a safe distance until the storm passes.

After 87 days BP has – temporarily – contained the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico which had briefly threatened to bring down the company. Officials in the United States gave the news a cautious welcome, as two days of testing to determine the integrity of the new wellhead begin.
