Winter storms drive Brits overseas

The storms across the UK over Christmas have urged more people to book some guaranteed sunshine.

Thomson and First Choice have seen record bookings over Christmas Day and Boxing Day across their website and phone lines, up ten per cent versus last year.

More bookings than ever before were made on mobile and tablet via Thomson and First Choice’s fully mobile optimised websites up 97 per cent and 61 per cent respectively from 2012.

On Christmas Day, Thomson mobile bookings rose 158 per cent compared with the same day last year.

Once the presents had been opened, thousands of Brits went online searching for winter sun or summer holiday deals – the peak of traffic across both the Thomson and First Choice websites was between 10:00 and 12:00 on Christmas Day.

Tenerife was the most popular destination booked on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day which boasts average monthly temperatures of between 22˚C and 28˚C.
Other popular destinations included Majorca, Lanzarote and the Caribbean coast of Mexico.

Jeremy Ellis, marketing and digital director for Thomson and First Choice said: “Our January sale began early again this year, on the 20th December, and it seems once again the bad weather has prompted more Brits to look for an escape to the sunshine.

“With some great deals available for the New Year and thousands of free kids’ places, it’s no surprise that people are booking early to take advantage of these offers.”
