The countdown has begun to the opening date for Scotland’s new home of live entertainment.
The SECC is delighted to announce that The Hydro, Glasgow, Scotland will be officially open for business from Monday 2 September 2013.
Confirmation of the opening date has been a result of the excellent progress made by The Hydro’s project team led by construction company Lend Lease and world renowned architects, Foster + Partners.
John Sharkey, CEO , SECC said:
“The progress that has been made with The Hydro has been outstanding. The entire project team including staff at the SECC should be congratulated for their efforts involved in the process of taking The Hydro on its journey to completion and ready for business. The construction team, our own staff and The Hydro team have all been playing their part in getting the building ready to allow us to deliver a fantastic opening night.
“The relationship with our naming rights sponsors, SSE (Scottish Hydro) is superb and this association has been invaluable in helping us create awareness to the wider public. Additional official partnerships with leading brands are also in the process of being confirmed.
“Last week we were placed as the 13th top ranked entertainment venue in the world by industry experts Pollstar in its “Top 100 Worldwide Entertainment Venues 2012”. This is fantastic news for the SECC and particularly for The Hydro as it recognises us as a major player in the global entertainment scene and positions the arena very favourably for securing even bigger names in the future.
Discussions are taking place at the moment with a number of major artists who will be part of the opening program at the world class music and events arena -
“We are presently speaking with artists to play as part of the opening night and full opening month next year and now that we have a date it makes it more of a reality - expect an announcement soon!!”
SECC has also confirmed that The Hydro will be offering a golden pair of VIP tickets to the official opening night. Those who are eligible will need to be registered on the Hydro website, http://www.thehydro.com/, by midnight on 31 July 2012.
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Deputy Chief Executive Richard Muir said: “This is very exciting news for Glasgow. The Hydro at The SECC will be a world class addition to the Glasgow‘s overall entertainment venue offering, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city and providing wider economic benefits to businesses in Scotland.
“The Hydro building has already become a real talking point in the city and we look forward to seeing the project move towards the completion date next year and to hearing the announcement as to who will take to the stage on the opening night.”
Gordon Anderson, General Executive Manager for Lend Lease in Scotland, said: “This is another landmark announcement in our project with the SECC and partners.
“The Hydro will become an iconic Glasgow building and venue on its completion and Lend Lease is fully focussed on that professional and safe delivery ahead of the first event in September next year.”
