Spanish strikes set to be called off

Holidaymakers set to travel over Easter look likely to be spared a series of strikes by Spanish airport employees.

A preliminary agreement between unions and employers has been reached, potentially averting plans for up to 22 days of industrial action.

Spanish airport authority AENA and three unions reached the agreement on working conditions of employees.

However, this now has to be endorsed by workers before it can come into force.

A spokeswoman for the Spanish Tourist Office said if the agreement is endorsed by workers, it would mean the strikes would be called off and both sides would commit to talks on any further disputes.

Spain has been benefiting from unrest in the Middle East in recent weeks, with holidaymakers considering booking holidays in the country as the expense of breaks in Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco.
