Southern African Development Community issues statement on Madagascar meetings

Following the meeting held on July 24-25, 2012 between His Excellency Andry Rajoelina, President of Transition in the Republic of Madagascar, and HE Marc Ravalomanana, former President of the Republic of Madagascar, on Desroches island in the Republic of Seychelles, the Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defense, and Security Cooperation, HE Jacob G. Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa, reconvened a follow-up meeting, which took place on August 8, 2012 in Mahe, Seychelles.

In attendance was HE James Michel, President of the Republic of Seychelles and host of the meeting, and Dr. Tomaz A. Salomao, the Executive Secretary of SADC.

In this regard, the meeting was held in a peaceful and serene environment. Discussions were cordial, and the participants displayed good leadership and determination in the full implementation of the Roadmap. All the parties were satisfied with the progress that had been made in search for a lasting political solution in Madagascar.

During the meeting, convergence emerged from the positions expressed by the two parties. In this regard, the meeting resolved to consult with all the stakeholders and signatories to the Roadmap with the view to solicit their views in the light of the outcomes of the meeting between HE Andry Rajoelina and HE Marc Ravalomanana in order to report to the Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and government in Maputo.

The meeting expressed gratitude to President Zuma for the focus and efforts he put in search for a lasting political solution in Madagascar and to HE President James Michel, and the government and people of Seychelles, for their generosity and hospitality.
