Sofitel Luxury Hotels Announces First Management Address in Uruguay
Sofitel Luxury Hotels is delighted to announce the acquisition of the Casino Carrasco Hotel in Montevideo, Uruguay following the signing of a management contract with Carrasco Nobile S/A. Sofitel aims to transform this historic building into the region’s most sought-after luxury address.
Sofitel’s investment will kick start 27 months of construction and restoration with the grand opening scheduled for 2011.
Upon opening, the future Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa will offer 116 rooms, a lobby bar, a 450-seat conference centre, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a fitness centre. It will also be the brand’s first hotel in South America to have a casino. A new French gastronomic restaurant, 1921, referring to the date of the hotel’s original completion, will add the hotel’s offering. The address will also host a 515 sqm So SPA by Sofitel.
Design of The Casino Carrasco Hotel originally began in 1912 but after construction came to a halt with the onslaught of World War One, the project was not completed until 1921. This landmark building quickly became the meeting place for the city’s high society.
Nagi Naoufal, Sofitel’s South America General Manager comments that, “Montevideo is an important destination in Latin America due to its potential for growth, its tourist attractions and its stable economy. We will be working to restore the inside of this establishment and to preserve its cultural and architectural identity. As the city does not have a luxury hotel of this standing, our objective is to position it as the best in the region, with emphasis on the luxury casino and the events space.”
