Scores feared dead in Indian rail crash

More than 20 people are believed to have died in northern India after a passenger train derailed and collided with a stationary goods train.

The accident happened in the state of Uttar Pradesh, officials confirmed.

Some six coaches from the Gorakhdham Express went off the rails during the incident.

They ploughed into the freight train at Chureb railway station earlier.

The passenger train was travelling from Gorakhpur town to Hisar in Haryana state, with rescuers now seeking to free those trapped in the wreckage.

India’s railway network operates 9,000 passenger trains and carries some 18 million passengers every day.
