Myanmar takes step out of the cold with Garuda Indonesia deal

Garuda Indonesia and Myanmar Airways International have concluded a codeshare agreement.

The signing of the agreement was carried out by Garuda Indonesia executive vice president, sales and marketing, Erik Meijer and Myanmar Airways International managing director Si Thu.

Under the agreement, Garuda Indonesia will place its GA marketing code on Myanmar Airways International’s flights between Bangkok-Yangon and Singapore-Yangon.

In turn, Myanmar Airways International will place its 8M marketing code on Garuda Indonesia’s operations between Jakarta-Bangkok and Jakarta-Singapore.

The codeshare will provide passengers between Myanmar and Indonesia with seamless and convenient connections through the international gateways of Singapore and Bangkok.

“We are pleased to announce this partnership with Myanmar Airways International which extends our network even further within the south-east Asia.

“Myanmar is an important market for Indonesia and through this partnership we can offer more travel options for the increasing number of passengers travelling between the two countries.

“At the same time, the agreement is expected to boost trade and tourism activities by making Indonesia much more accessible for Myanmar visitors,” explained Meijer.

The codeshare flights are pending final government approvals, but are targeted to be available for implementation in December 2014.

Si Thu welcomed the new codeshare services with Garuda Indonesia.

He explained: “Indonesia is an increasingly important market to Myanmar with around 55,000 people currently travelling between the two countries for both business and leisure.

“We are glad that our passengers will be offered a wider choice of destinations as well as greater flexibility and convenience when traveling between Yangon and major cities in Indonesia with this new code-share service.”
