The age-old stereotype shows no signs of abating as almost a third of Brits (31%) would fork out for a hotel room for their in-laws this Christmas, if they had their own way. The results of a poll announced today by leading discount hotel specialist LateRooms.com, show that in most cases (29%) it is the in-laws who spark arguments on Christmas Day, leaving many family members keen to get away in the festive period.

Almost one in five (16%) would send their own mothers away to a hotel while 26% would get rid of their siblings. The most popular replacements for annoying family members were the likes of Stephen Fry, Cheryl Cole, George Clooney and even Simon Cowell.

The majority of those asked would rather escape the stress of Christmas with a substantial 90% stating they would consider staying in a hotel in the holiday season. Over half (52%) of those asked would rather tuck themselves away in a country house hotel to avoid having to be nice to relatives. 

The top five most stressful moments respondents would like to get away from are;

  * Christmas shopping (36%)
  * Family arguments (21%)
  * Cooking Christmas dinner (15%)
  * Wrapping presents (10%)
  * Sending Christmas cards (10%)

It comes as no surprise that Brits harbour a ‘bah-humbug’ attitude to Christmas with a third (33%) having to entertain an extra 6-10 guests on the big day.
