The project, in the works for many months between Norway’s state broadcaster NRK and Hurtigruten, ran from June 16 to 22 as 3 million Norwegians dropped in and watched parts of the program on the national TV-channel NRK2. This represents nearly three quarters of the country’s population, a record breaking rating for NRK2. Viewers from other countries (through the Internet), hit 1.3 million, with the U.S. coming in as the third largest audience behind Norway and Denmark. The broadcast can be viewed at www.nrk.no/hurtigruten/.
During the voyage Hurtigruten was a trending topic on Twitter, at one time with one tweet every six seconds. The show’s Facebook-site “Hurtigruten minute by minute” received 65,000 “likes” during the five and a half day voyage. The broadcast resulted in all-time high visits on Hurtigruten’s websites around the world.
Multiple cameras were set up onboard the 457 berths MS Nordnorge to offer a sweeping view of the voyage as well as interviews with passengers and scenes aboard the ship including the bridge. The cameras filmed around the clock until the ship docked in Kirkenes. The Coastal Voyage, considered by several top publications as the “world’s most beautiful voyage,” transits Norway’s spectacular west coast, sailing between the cultural center of Bergen and Kirkenes, high above the Arctic Circle, with a total of 34 ports of call. The itinerary presents an ever-changing landscape of small fishing villages in the rugged Lofoten Islands; Art Nouveau Alesund, the medieval Viking capital of Trondheim; the western fjords with UNESCO-listed Geiranger leading the way, the wonderful coast of Helgeland, Tromsø as the Gateway to the Arctic, and the North Cape.
