EVA adapts iPads to advance onboard service and safety

Apple, the world’s leading technology innovator, launched a brand-new video, showcasing creative business adaptations of its popular iPad. In the video, Apple highlights EVA Air for its use of the iPad as a flight-crew tool for advancing flight safety and service quality. EVA is the only Asian carrier to be featured in Apple’s business profiles program. The 3:44-minute video is available on Apple’s global website in English and later in other five languages, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish, http://www.apple.com/ipad/business/profiles/eva-airways/#video-eva-airways.

EVA President Chang Kuo-Wei conceived the idea of using iPads to enhance flight safety and efficiency. The airline began to provide the popular tablets to flight crews in July 2011. All 800 of EVA’s pilots now perform some functions with iPads, 200 of the airline’s chief pursers have begun to employ them and the airline’s innovative adaptation of the latest technology is proving to be a success.

Apple’s film crew made special trips to Taiwan in February and May of this year to interview President Chang and personnel with key roles in the airline’s iPad initiative. The result is an engaging, professional production that tells a story of creative adaptation and application of leading-edge technology.

“The airline business is all about speed,” said Chang. “Everything we do, from reservations to checking in passengers for flights, calls for advanced technology. Using the iPad helps us transport passengers to every corner of the world in the fastest, safest and most comfortable way.”

To incorporate iPads into cabin services, EVA took the next step in its adaptation of the technology and designed two Apps, the Flight Operations Bag for pilots and the Cabin Information System for chief pursers. This platform and the convenient accessibility of the iPad cloud services enables flight crews to review needed information in advance of flights, anytime, anywhere. They can read flight plans and bulletins, or review passenger information with these Apps. Pilots and chief pursers can also take advantage of real-time access to download the most up-to-date versions of flight manuals, saving reams of paper, reducing total flight weight load and demonstrating environmental protection measures that complement everyday practices.

Apple officials have been enthusiastic about EVA’s adaptation of the iPad for commercial aviation. The technology leader’s introduction to the airline’s iPad in Business profile reads, “By outfitting its pilots and cabin crews with iPads and specialised apps, EVA has elevated its quest for innovative technology, service quality and safety.”
