Low cost carrier easyjet has named John Barton, the chairman of fashion retailer Next, as its new chairman.

Barton is expected to take up the post from May 1, succeeding Sir Mike Rake, who announced his intention to stand down from the post earlier this year.

The appointment was made by the easyJet board’s nominations committee.

Barton said: “EasyJet has clearly established itself as one of Europe’s leading airlines and one of Britain’s most successful and dynamic companies.

“My aim will be to ensure that the management team of easyJet can continue to deliver profitable growth and market leading returns.”

As well as his role at Next, Barton is chairman of Catlin Group, the international insurance underwriters.
