Dozens killed as crane crashes in Mecca’s Grand Mosque
At least 107 people have been killed and hundreds more were injured when a crane collapsed at the Grand Mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca on Friday, according to reports.
Rescue teams had been sent to the scene according to the country’s civil defence authority.
Next month up to two million people are expected to arrive in the Saudi city from all over the world as Muslims make their annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
Saudi authorities began a major expansion of the site last year in order to increase the area of the mosque by 400,000 square metres (4.3 million square feet), to allow it to accommodate up to 2.2 million people at once.
