Latest WAP technology provides real time information from all Swissotel hotels and resorts

Swiss™tel Hotels & Resorts provides service to guests even before they arrive. The company recently put in place the latest cellular internet technology, making pertinent information on any of its hotels around the world quickly and easily available.

This real time information, easily updated daily by the hotels, is available through WAP, or Wireless Application Protocol, a global specification that is found on certain handheld devices like mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios, and personal digital assistants (such as Palm Pilots), making them Web-enabled. Swiss™tel is the first international hotel company to have a worldwide rollout of WAP.

Information seekers don’t have to call a hotel or open their laptops to the Swiss™tel Web site. Instead, they may use their WAP-enabled cellular telephones to obtain information on a hotel’s location and features, directions and airport transportation, and even weather updates. Each hotel will also be able to provide the latest on its meetings and events, as well as happenings in the city and availability of tickets to performances and events.

“We are using WAP technology to provide our guests with the information they most frequently telephone ahead to ask of a hotel concierge or obtain from our Web site,” said Michelle Woodley, vice president distribution, Swiss™tel Hotels & Resorts.

“WAP is just another example of Swiss™tel’s use of the latest technology to provide travelers with yet another option to obtain updated information on our hotels. Cellular internet capabilities will be the number one trend over the next couple of years. As the number of WAP-enabled users grows we are happy to place real time information at their fingertips,” adds Oliver Bernet, director, new technology.

Swiss™tel Hotels & Resorts will expand its WAP content in accord with customers’ growing desires for more information.

Research shows there are currently 552 million wireless phones and 10% of them are Web-enabled. Industry projections call for about 900 million mobile phones in use in 2003 and 80% of them will be Web-enabled.
