InterContinental Hotels Group is set to become the largest international hotel operator in Perth following today’s signing of partnership agreements with Burswood Limited
Under the agreements, InterContinental Hotels Group take over the room operations of the luxury Burswood Resort Hotel, which will be re-branded as InterContinental Burswood Resort Perth in early August 2003. Having recently undergone a A$28 million (US$17.8 million) refurbishment, the property features 413 luxurious rooms, an Executive Club Lounge, the Waterside Health & Fitness Centre and Escape Day Spa, and a comprehensive selection of retail outlets, restaurants, bars, conference and recreation facilities.
The re-branding will coincide with the start of construction of the 291-room Holiday Inn Burswood by InterContinental Hotels Group, which is scheduled to open in early 2005. The total project cost is approximately A$50 million.
The agreements with Burswood are subject to a number of approvals, including the approval of the Western Australian Minister for Racing and Gaming, Liquor Licensing Authority and Foreign Investment Review Board. The agreements are also subject to successful tendering of the hotel and carpark construction contracts.
InterContinental Hotels Group will manage the rooms division of InterContinental Burswood Resort Perth prior to the opening of Holiday Inn Burswood, at which time InterContinental Hotels Group and Burswood Limited will enter a partnership for management of both hotels. The partnership will involve InterContinental Hotels Group operating the rooms division and Burswood operating the food and beverage division of both hotels.
“The signing of this partnership agreement is a significant achievement and another key step in our strategic expansion plans for both InterContinental and Holiday Inn and is another example of our focus on extending the Group’s network of hotels,” said InterContinental Hotels Group Managing Director Asia Pacific, Patrick Imbardelli.
“Burswood is the ideal location and venue for InterContinental, one of the world’s most renowned luxury hotel brands. By introducing both the InterContinental and Holiday Inn brands to the Burswood Resort complex, we can provide a wider choice to business and leisure travellers covering mid-scale to five star accommodation experiences.
“With this new agreement, InterContinental Hotels Group will double the size of its hotel portfolio in Perth - one of Australia’s key international gateways and already home to Crowne Plaza Perth and Holiday Inn City Centre Perth. Upon the opening of Holiday Inn Burswood, InterContinental Hotels Group will be the largest international hotel operator in Perth with a total of four hotels and 1,074 rooms,” Mr Imbardelli said.
Burswood Managing Director, John Schaap, said the venture was strategically important to Burswood and its competitive positioning.
“The partnership will maximise our competitive advantage, particularly in the convention market, by providing the Resort with a more appealing mix of accommodation for conference delegates,” Mr Schaap said.
“The combined management of two hotel facilities through our partnership with InterContinental Hotels Group will create a more diverse hotel offering for Burswood, catering to both mid-level and deluxe accommodation markets.
“One of the key advantages is that Burswood will develop a much stronger market position nationally and globally, through the worldwide network and selling power of the InterContinental Hotels Group. The partnership will enable us to leverage benefits from InterContinental Hotels Group’s strong global branding, promotion, loyalty and reservation systems to boost our profile and appeal as a corporate, convention and leisure destination,” Mr Schaap said.
Surrounded by 100 hectares of landscaped gardens and parkland, Burswood International Resort Casino is located on the banks of the Swan River, 10 minutes from the domestic and international airports and five minutes from Perth’s city centre.
