La Jolla, Calif. - 2002 - Destination Hotels & Resorts (DH&R), one of the largest independent hotel management companies in the U.S., featuring 29 independent, luxury and upscale hotels, resorts and golf clubs nationwide and in the United Kingdom, will officially unveil the name of the new luxury hotel and conference center today at 10 a.m. during a special ceremony. The property will be located on the site of the former Black Family La Jolla Stables on North Torrey Pines Road, on land owned by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and leased to DH&R. The hotel and conference center will emphasize traditional California coastal rancho hospitality.
Scheduled to open mid-2004, the 210-room property will have 25,000 square feet of meeting/conference space and a host of luxury amenities with convenient access to golf and the beach. It will be across the street from UCSD’s Eleanor Roosevelt College and adjacent to the Salk Institute.
“We are excited at the prospect of building a world-class hotel and conference center to serve the surrounding academic and scientific institutions, as well as other business and leisure travelers,” said Rob Lowe, Senior Vice President of Lowe Enterprises’ Destination Development Corporation (DDC).
Lowe Enterprises, a national real estate investment, management and development firm, and Destination Hotels & Resorts, a subsidiary of Lowe Enterprises, were selected by UCSD to develop and manage the conference center hotel. “After an extensive and thorough review of candidates, Lowe Enterprises and Destination Hotels & Resorts clearly demonstrated that they were the best team to develop and manage this state-of-the-art conference facility,” said Nancy Kossan, Director of Real Estate Development for UCSD.
Charles Peck, President and Chief Operating Officer for Destination Hotels & Resorts, points to the company’s proven track record with other regional Destination properties. “Like the Hotel del Coronado and L’Auberge Del Mar Resort and Spa, the hotel being built on the Black Family La Jolla Stables site will provide La Jolla/San Diego a unique alternative - a full-service hotel and conference center exemplifying the lifestyle of a classic California Rancho,” he said.
Hill Glazer Architects designed the hotel to reflect the Black Family’s traditional, yet sophisticated lifestyle. The property will be composed of a series of expansive low-rise adobe structures with arched doorways and clay tile roofs around rancho-style landscaped courtyards. Traditional materials, including wood lintels, exposed rafters, wrought-iron and thick plaster walls, will be used to expand upon the rich history of the site and its indigenous surroundings.
“The new property’s traditional Southern California accent and state-of-the-art conference center will help grow La Jolla’s meeting and convention market,” says Reint Reinders, President and CEO of San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau.
