Marriott International (NYSE / MAR) will assume management of the 588-room Hotel Penta in Lisbon, Portugal, effective October 1, 1999. Following an extensive renovation program that is expected to take 18 months to complete, the hotel will be rebranded as the Lisbon Marriott.
The hotel is owned by Sociedad Internacional De Turismo, S.A. (SOTEIS S.A.), and is located on Avenida Dos Combatentes, midway between the Lisbon airport and city center and about a 10 minute drive from the former Expo 98 site, which is being redeveloped into a major commercial and residential area. The Lisbon Stock Exchange is located nearby.
“We are very pleased to be awarded the management contract for this hotel and to see our portfolio in the Iberian peninsula grow,” said Ed Fuller, president and managing director of Marriott International`s international lodging operations. “Being represented in Lisbon is an important step in our globalization strategy in which our goal is to have a presence in key commercial centers and capital cities throughout the world. We are delighted with the planned renovations and are confident that the Lisbon Marriott will be attractive to both business and leisure travelers.”
Speaking for the owner group, Fares Albaker, member of the administration of SOTEIS, said: “We chose Marriott because of its consistent reputation for high levels of customer service. Its worldwide reservations network and internationally recognized brand name, coupled with the human touch that greets each guest on check-in, convinced us that Marriott will continue to be the world`s foremost hotel operator”
For dining and recreation, the Lisbon Marriott will have three bars and restaurants, swimming pool, health club, squash court, sauna and jacuzzi. An executive floor and lounge and enhanced life safety and security features are being added as part of the refurbishment program.
For conferences and social events, the Lisbon Marriott has seven meeting rooms totaling 1,784 square meters of space, capable of accommodating 600 people in the largest room and a capacity for 2,200 delegates.
The Lisbon Marriott will be Marriott International`s first hotel in Portugal. The company is represented on the Iberian peninsula with a 288 villa vacation club community (timeshare) in Marbella, Spain, called Marriott`s Marbella Beach Resort. Later this year, the 150-room Mallorca Marriott Golf Resort and Spa will open in conjunction with the company`s second vacation club community in Spain, the 232-villa Marriott`s Club Son Antem.
