Marriott International Names Arne Sorenson Executive Vice President And Chief Financial Officer

Marriott International, Inc. (MAR / NYSE) today announced that Arne Sorenson has been named executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective October 1, 1998.


Mr. Sorenson succeeds Michael A. Stein who has resigned to take a similar position at Nordstrom, Inc., headquartered in Seattle, Washington. Mr. Stein joined Marriott Corporation in 1989, and has been chief financial officer of Marriott International, Inc., since October 1993. Prior to joining Marriott, he was a partner with Arthur Andersen, LLP., with which he was associated for 18 years.

Mr. Sorenson, 39, currently senior vice president of business development, joined Marriott in 1996. He was instrumental in the acquisition of the Renaissance Hotel Group in 1997 and has played a leadership role in Marriott`s significant global expansion over the past two years. Prior to joining Marriott, he was a partner with Latham & Watkins law firm in Washington, D.C. His law practice focused on mergers and acquisitions, Securities and Exchange Commission matters including public reporting requirements, and real estate development.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, and raised in Minnesota, Mr. Sorenson received his BA degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1980 and a J.D. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1983. He is a former clerk for Judge Ellsworth Van Graafeiland of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York. Mr. Sorenson and his wife Ruth have four children.
