24th Mar 1998

Marriott International, Inc. (MAR/NYSE) has announced it will manage the former Sheraton Washington Hotel for its owner, the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company of Boston, Mass. Marriott assumed management of the 1,338-room property on March 16, and the hotel`s name has been officially changed to the Marriott Wardman Park.

Located less than two miles northwest of downtown on Connecticut Avenue, the Marriott Wardman Park has been a local landmark since Harry Wardman opened it in 1918. It is Marriott`s seventh full-service hotel in Washington, and the company`s 40th property in the D.C. metro area.

“We are very excited to be working with John Hancock on such an important and historic hotel,” said John Marriott, Senior Vice President of Lodging for Marriott`s Mid-Atlantic Region. “The Marriott Wardman Park will be a significant addition to our global network of 42 convention hotels and will play a key role in attracting major groups to the nation`s capital.”

“We chose Marriott because of the company`s well-deserved reputation for consistently providing the highest level of customer service,” said Michelle Russo, Investment Officer for Hancock`s Real Estate Investment Group. “Their outstanding service has created an exceptionally loyal customer base, particularly in the meetings market, and they manage more convention hotels than any other chain in the U.S.”

Situated on 16 acres, the Marriott Wardman Park is the city`s largest convention hotel. It offers 95,000 square feet of exhibit space and 46 meeting rooms and two ballrooms totaling 78,000 square feet. For dining, the hotel features two restaurants, an in-house deli and a lobby bar. Other amenities include a multi-lingual concierge staff and desk, full-service business center, swimming pool, fitness room, barber shop, and gift shop. The hotel also has its own Washington, D.C. Metro stop and is two blocks from the National Zoo.

Adjacent to the main building is the Wardman Tower, a vintage 1928 building listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Characterized by its design, decor and history, the Wardman Tower has been the home of three U.S. presidents and four vice presidents, two Supreme Court chief justices, as well as hundreds of Cabinet members and members of Congress.

Effective immediately, reservations can be made by contacting the hotel directly at (202) 328-2000, calling Marriott`s Worldwide Reservations Center at (800) 228-9290, visiting the company`s Internet web site at, or utilizing a travel professional. The Marriott Wardman Park also participates in the Marriott Rewards frequent travel program. Ranked the industry`s number one hotel frequency program, Marriott Rewards recognizes the company`s best customers with free travel and special services.
