Protea Hotels In Joint Venture To Lanuch New 5-Star Hotel Brand

13th Mar 2001

Protea Hotels, together with Pamodzi Leisure Solutions, have launched African Pride Hotels, a new Superior-Deluxe brand. This is to be the vehicle which will enable the Protea Hotel Group to finally break into this exclusive top-end market, a step up from their prestigious portfolio of Premier Protea Hotels. “African Pride will be the first ‘5 star’ brand to ever have originated in Southern Africa and, through it, we aim to prove that Africa does not need to rely on International brands to offer the highest standards of service, accommodation and facilities associated with five star hotels,” said Otto Stehlik, Executive Chairman of Protea Hospitality Corporation.

Protea Hotels are very aware of the history that surrounds previous attempts at entering into this exclusive ‘5-star’ market. “Many Deluxe International brands have previously come and failed. But we strongly believe that African Pride Hotels can be different, not only because it is backed by our marketing and management infrastructure, but because this brand is African owned and African managed,” concludes Stehlik.

Headed by Stan Evans and incorporating Pamodzi Leisure Solutions, African Pride Hotels will take advantage of Protea Hotels` marketing and management infrastructure and vast experience throughout Africa. Formed in 1996, Pamodzi is fronted by leading professionals and business people and was created to be the first black controlled South African leisure and tourism group.  Whilst Evans may be better known for his dynamic leadership of the 5 star Villa Via hotel group, he is now at the helm of African Pride with the main purpose of developing and acquiring new properties for this brand.

“The last ten years have seen the continent of Africa firmly emerging onto the world tourism stage. With its breathtaking and unrivalled diversity of wild life, culture and scenic beauty, Africa has increasingly become the destination of choice for millions of seasoned tourists from all over the globe. Through this ‘African Renaissance’ comes the increasingly higher expectations of quality service level coupled with the demand for a superior physical tourism product. African Pride Hotels is an exclusive African collection of luxury hotels and game lodges offering the highest standards of service, accommodation and facilities that meet and exceed these expectations and demands,” says Stan Evans, Managing Director of Pamodzi Leisure Solutions.

African Pride Hotels has already secured its first four properties. The first to be launched will be the highly exclusive Lion Sands Private Game Reserve, situated on the Sabi River in the Sabi Sands region. “We are particularly excited about the launch of Lion Sands Private Game Reserve in April 2001, which, even in its incomplete state, already far surpasses our highest expectations with its superb setting and luxurious accommodation,” continued Evans. Two of the four properties are within the Kruger National Park, with the third property being situated within the Addo National Park.
