The Travel Channel announced its selection of the top 10 most romantic places to get married in a one-hour television special on Friday, May 31. The program, which featured wedding sites from around the world, honored the Hotel del Coronado with the number two ranking, just behind the Heliotopos Hotel on Santorini Island, Greece.
The Hotel del Coronado has been celebrating romance for over a century. Even before The Del opened its doors in 1888, it showed its romantic promise. In fact, the resort celebrated its first wedding in 1887, while The Del was still under construction. The bride and groom, daughter and son of two supervising engineers, exchanged vows in the Ballroom.
One of greatest love stories of all time is rumored to have begun at the resort. Many have wondered if the Prince of Wales (who would later become King Edward VIII and then the Duke of Windsor) may have first seen Wallis Spencer Simpson during his visit to the Hotel del Coronado in 1920. Sixteen years later, Edward would abdicate his throne to marry the divorced Simpson.
Add to this romantic legacy the hotel’s sun-drenched beaches, moonlit ocean views, impeccable service, and award-winning cuisine, and it’s easy to see why the Hotel del Coronado is one of the most sought-after romantic destinations in the world.
The Travel Channel’s 10 picks for World’s Best Places to Get Married (starting with #10) include: Grand Lido, Negril, Jamaica; La Sala Rossa Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, Italy; Little White Wedding Chapel, Las Vegas, Nevada; Old Lahaina Luau, Maui, Hawaii; Elephant Safari Park, Taro, Bali, Indonesia; Empire State Building, New York City, New York; Caneel Bay, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands; Skibo Castle, Dornach, Scotland; Hotel del Coronado, Coronado, California; Heliotopos Hotel, Santorini Island, Greece.
The Hotel del Coronado, a National Historic Landmark, recently completed a $55 million restoration. The dramatic enhancements included oceanfront dining venues and luxuriously redesigned and air-conditioned Victorian rooms. Adjoining the beach-side façade of the historic Victorian Building, the Windsor Lawn stretches seaward, re-establishing The Del’s connection to the Pacific.
