Intercontinental Refurbishes in Rome and Madrid

(London, 27 August 2002) Two multi-million dollar renovations are set to bring InterContinental properties in Madrid and Rome to new levels of luxury. Renovation programmes at InterContinental Castellana Madrid and InterContinental De La Ville Rome are set for completion in September 2002, providing guests with even more comfort and indulgence.

Since its opening in 1953, InterContinental Castellana Madrid has been renowned for its celebrity clients including Ava Gardner, Tony Curtis, Sofia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. Today, the hotel continues to attract a cosmopolitan clientele, whilst remaining Spanish at heart.

Its enviable location is just a short stroll to Madrid’s most fashionable shopping district the ‘Golden Mile’, with its designer boutiques, fine shoe shops and exquisite jewellery stores. Also nearby, is the ‘Paseo del Arte’ (Art Promenade) with stunning museums and an eclectic range of restaurants and bars.

A new elegant aesthetic is carried through the 307-room property, which highlights the features of the hotel’s original design, including the lobby with its imposing dome and its landscaped gardens, a welcome oasis in the Spanish capital. ‘Bar 49’, also located in the dome, is set to become a vibrant rendez-vous point for Madrileños and visitors alike. Room rates start from 355 euros (approx £230) for a standard double room based on two people sharing.

InterContinental De La Ville Rome is located at the top of the famous Spanish Steps, a stone`s throw from Piazza di Spagna and Via Condotti, Rome`s most fashionable shopping district. Also nearby, are the Pincio Gardens from which one can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the whole of the Italian capital.

The hotel - which began life as a nunnery - is a historic property dating back to Roman times standing on the site of the ancient Lucullo`s Gardens in the elegant Via Sistina. Its 16th century façade reflects the magnificence of the neoclassical interior with the lobby and other guest areas furnished with antiques and carpets.

The 192 guest bedrooms are being stylishly redesigned and are all fitted with the latest technology and facilities to ensure comfort for both the business and leisure traveller, without comprising the traditional feel of the rooms. Dining facilities at the hotel include the excellent `Piazzetta de la Ville`, a speciality Italian restaurant. InterContinental De La Ville Rome costs from 407 euros (approx £255) per night for a standard double room based on two people sharing.
