W Hotels, World`s Foremost

W Hotels, the world`s foremost “Style” Hotel, will open its 17th hotel in San Diego in December 2002.
The opening of W San Diego, with its unique rooftop “Beach Bar” featuring heated sand, a fire pit and private cabanas for sizzling nighttime fun, marks Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide`s fourth W Hotel in California.
“We are thrilled to be a part of the exciting renaissance of downtown San Diego, a city that has long been one of America`s preeminent leisure destinations,” says Barry Sternlicht, Chairman and C.E.O. of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT). “The magnificent coastline, near-perfect climate and sophisticated, sociable locals make it the quintessential Southern California city and the perfect spot for our next W.”
Located in the heart of the new residential loft district just south of Little Italy on State and B streets, W San Diego will be the first “Style” hotel to open in California`s Southernmost urban center. The design will be a collaboration between San Francisco-based Shopworks (designers of W San Francisco, W Seattle and W Chicago), Jensen/Fey Architects and W Design Group. The 261-room hotel, including 32 suites on 16 floors, will celebrate the casual comfort and beach culture of the San Diego lifestyle.
An urban resort atmosphere welcomes guests upon arrival with a strikingly dramatic round entryway leading guests to the reception area. Upon check-in, guests encounter a clear resin wall embedded with floating shells serving as a backdrop for the desk. Moving into the spacious W Living Room, guests are beckoned to relax in plush seating while mingling or enjoying W`s visually stimulating “technowall” or the wide selection of W`s unique games. A glass bookcase filled with an eclectic mix of sea glass jars and vases will divide the Living Room from the Cafe. Soaring ceilings and sheer drapes frame the decor that mixes the textures and natural fibers of Mexican influence with the colors and lines of American Modernism.
