Emirates Towers Hotel, in cooperation with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), recently organized “The Vertical Marathon 2002”, which is the first of its kind, whereby participants climbed the stairs of the Emirates Towers Office Tower, the tallest building in the Middle East and Europe, to the fiftieth floor.
Large groups made up of individuals and corporate teams participated in this event to support a worthy cause by offering donations during registration for the marathon to the non-profit organization, Medecins Sans Frontieres, and for the pure excitement and fun of a physical challenge.
The team at Emirates Towers Hotel also gave great care and attention to the participants and to the marathon itself by offered water and rehydration stations on various floors during the race to the fiftieth floor. In addition, precautions were taken by organizing a team of highly skilled paramedics who were placed on standby during the marathon. The care and efficiency taken in the organisation of the event was so appreciated by the participants that they would like “The Vertical Marathon” to become an annual event.
Results exceeded all expectations where the winner of the marathon was from the Individual Male category and had completed the fifty floors in a record time of eight minutes and seventeen seconds. The winner of the Individual Female category completed the challenge in eleven minutes and twenty-four seconds, whereas the winning Corporate Team finished the race in eleven minutes and twenty-two seconds.
After the physical challenge, Emirates Towers Hotel organized a cocktail reception on the fiftieth floor of the office tower to hand out prizes to the winners and certificates to all participants.
