The Vice Chairman of the Spanish hotel company Sol Meliá, Sebastián Escarrer, presided over the official inauguration of the Meliá White House Hotel which, after being purchased at the end of 1999 by the company for 80 million euros, has been subject to a very thorough 30 million euro renovation and refurbishment. To celebrate the fact, the hotel organized an original themed gala dinner attended by a large number of figures from the Spanish and British tourism industries as well as members of London society.
According to Sebastián Escarrer, “although Sol Meliá is a global multinational company, it is no less true that we bring elements of our Spanish culture and nature to our business wherever we may be. In a city such as London, where we are the only Spanish hotel company to be operating, it is also with great pride and great pleasure that we aim to stake our claim as the “Spanish Heart” of the city”.
He added that, “Although the Meliá White House is obviously open to all, as it always has been and as it always will be, after the enormous efforts that have gone into renovating the property, we do firmly aim to make this hotel the Grand Spanish Hotel in London, the hotel in which all of my fellow countrymen will feel at home and in which those guests from other countries may get to know and to appreciate the quality of the products and services which have made Spanish tourism famous all over the world while also enjoying the very best of the rich and varied Spanish cuisine”.
He ended by adding that, “the British market is one of the most important markets for Sol Meliá, with 18% of the travelers that stay in our company’s hotels come from the UK. In spite of this excellent relation with the UK tourism industry, we had never been able to gain a foothold “in situ”. Now, all of those fans of Sol Meliá in this country will no longer have to travel to another country to enjoy the quality of the products and services provided by Meliá Hotels and the company in general, now freely available in our London home: the Meliá White House”.
