Orbitz, a leading online travel company, announced today that Continental Airlines has implemented Orbitz` Supplier Link technology enabling Orbitz.com to book tickets directly with Continental`s reservation system.
Effective immediately, Continental
will save up to 77% in distribution costs for every ticket booked on Orbitz.com
using Supplier Link.
“Launching Supplier Link with another carrier further demonstrates Orbitz` commitment to applying new cost-saving technologies to the process of booking airline tickets,” said Leon Chism, Orbitz Chief Internet Architect. “By using reliable and scalable PC components, Orbitz` Supplier Link can handle large volumes of traffic, compute fares, store passenger records, manage availability information and book tickets - all about 10 times faster than other systems and for substantially lower cost.”
Orbitz developed Supplier Link from scratch using the latest Internet technology rather than basing the system on mainframe computer applications. Orbitz` use of Java and commodity hardware allows for quick, easy and scalable implementations of each Supplier Link carrier.
“Continental Airlines welcomes this milestone achievement in our continual effort to bring down the cost of distribution,” said John Slater, Managing Director of Distribution Planning, of Continental Airlines. “Through Supplier Link, Orbitz has developed a technology capable of reducing distribution costs and increasing competition in the travel distribution marketplace. For Continental, Supplier Link has proven the value of direct supplier to distributor connections.”
Orbitz introduced Supplier Link in August and nine other carriers have signed agreements to use the technology.
