is now offering skiers free access to independently researched ski resort guides which provide å‘warts and allå’ reviews of popular European and North American ski resorts.
The site’s re-launched Snow Holidays section offers highly detailed and authoritative overviews of resorts across Andorra, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Italy, Switzerland and the USA. As well practical tips and information such as weather updates and the cost of lift passes and boot hire, the site also includes details of each resort’s good and bad points.
For example, the French resort of Les Menuires is praised for its “extensive, well connected ski area” with the site noting it is “ideal for mixed ability groups,” offers “some of the best skiing in the Alps” and is the “cheapest resort in the Three Valleys.” But it also describes the Alpine resort as “the ugly duckling of the Three Valleys - a 1960s architectural faux pas” and notes its “lack of non-skiing activities.”
Explaining the reasoning behind the site’s revamp Richard Hadfield, Thomas Cook’s director of new sales channels said: “Quite simply we want people to better equipped to choose resorts which match their needs in terms of skiing ability and the importance of other factors such as nightlife, scenery and budget. If the quality and quantity of slopes is the key factor, then Les Menuires would be a good choice but if a skier also wants chocolate box scenery, it would not.”
“We believe that customers who have access to more up-front opinions of resorts will have a more enjoyable holiday as they are more likely to book the resort that can meet their individual needs and expectations.”
Among other features in the new Ski Resort Guides, written by Felix Milne, specialist ski writer at whatsonwhen.com, are:
á An interactive map allowing users to highlight resorts according to suitability for beginners, intermediates, advanced, boarders, nightlife and budget
á Webcams covering many major resorts
á Advice on when to go, including details of local school holidays
á Vital statistics including altitude and the number of slopes, lifts and snowboard parks
á Details of package holiday costs
á Local tourist information contacts
The site also provides the facility to search and book holidays, including late availability bargains.
