Airline Secrutiy Fee Hike Scratched

Following intense lobbying by airline and travel agent groups, the House Appropriations Committee May 10 killed a measure that would have doubled the $2.50 per segment security fee paid on airline tickets to $5.

Lawmakers wanted to raise the fee to cover certain costs for the Transportation Security Administration.

But airlines and travel agents contended raising the fee would hamper air travel sales, just as the industry was starting to rebound from the economic impact of the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks.
