determination to be a serious player in the no-frills sector has been underlined with the appointment of Ryanair`s Tim Jeans as managing director of the new airline.
Mr Jeans will leave his current position as sales and marketing director at Ryanair
at the end of the month, and join MyTravel ahead of the airline`s launch later this year. Reporting to global development chief executive Richard Carrick, he will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the airline including yield management and sales and marketing.
Commenting on his new appointment Mr Jeans said: “The UK`s charter airlines have the lowest costs in the industry. MyTravel will soon be delivering more accessible and flexible air travel from its chosen UK base. The low fares business is still in its infancy and there are still huge opportunities for new entrants.”
During his time at Ryanair, Mr Jeans been consistently critical about the role of agents and the value they bring to the distribution chain. But while agents may be in two minds about his appointment, it is a welcome boost to MyTravel which has been the subject of takeover rumours after releasing a poor set of half year results last month.
It follows the announcement that Holidays by Phone boss Steve Endacott is to join MyTravel as commercial director for the UK charter and retail distribution businesses. Mr Endacott was sales and commercial director at Airtours - now MyTravel - for five years until 1997.
