Northwest Mechanics Want Labor Representation

8th Oct 2003

Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) Local 33, serving Northwest and Mesaba Airlines, said that for the health of the airline industry, labor should be represented on the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Management Advisory Council. The council recently appointed six additional members, none of them representing labor.
“The word `management` in this group`s name refers to its stated responsibility for counseling the FAA Administrator and senior agency leadership `on management, policy, spending and regulatory matters.` It should not mean the crucial viewpoint of labor is automatically excluded on these issues of common concern to all parties,” said AMFA Local 33 President Jim Atkinson.
“For the health of the airline industry, we urge the FAA to add labor representation to the Management Advisory Council at the earliest practical date,” he added.
