The World Health Organisation has repeated that Singapore ‘continues to be a safe destination for travellers’ after the US Centre for Disease Control confirmed last week’s case in Singapore was SARS.
It added that ‘travellers from Singapore pose no risk to other countries’.
The isolated case was contracted in by a lab technician working on SARS. The incident has prompted the WHO to convene a special meeting dedicated to laboratory safety.
The WHO web site gives little attention to the Singapore SARS case. Today the Geneva-based organisation has launched a new educational programme warning about the dangers of exposure to UV radiation. Director general Dr Lee Jong-wook at said: “As ozone depletion becomes more marked and as people around the world engage more in sun-seeking behaviour, the risk of developing health complications from over-exposure to UV radiation is becoming a substantial public health concern.”
Meanwhile the Singapore Tourist Board has announced that it will start a name-=and-=shame campaign against shops which rip off tourists after figures showed that shops accounted for half the 800 complaints the board received from an estimated 8m visitors.
