Singapore readies 18-hour flight

Singapore Airlines plans to launch nonstop service between Los Angeles and Singapore in February, an airline spokesman in the U.S. said Tuesday.
That would become the longest nonstop route in the world, with a flight time that could reach 18 hours.
The service will use the airline`s new A340-500 aircraft, and Singapore is planning to add some features and service touches specifically for such a long flight, but those details won`t be revealed until the airline officially announces the new route in mid-October.
One thing travelers will be able to look forward to is an upgraded economy class in A340s to go along with the airline`s recent upgrade of its business class.
Those extra touches also could be a preview of sorts of what`s to come when Singapore becomes the launch customer for the super-sized A380 in 2006, the spokesman said.
