Lufthansa today announced it took top honors for “Best Sparkling Wine” and second place overall in Business Traveler Magazine`s 15th Annual Airline Wine Competition. Over 30 international airlines submitted two of their best selections of sparkling, red and white wines offered in First and Business Class. Star Alliance partner Thai Airways took first place in the “Best Overall” category, followed by Lufthansa in second place and Icelandair in third place. Among this and the other categories in the competition, Star Alliance partners ranked five times in the top three spots.
Among all of the sparkling entries submitted, Lufthansa`s current Business Class Champagne, the Duval Leroy “Fleur de Champagne” Brut, was named “Best Sparkling Wine.” Lufthansa shares the first place spot with Star Alliance partners Thai Airways and Emirates, who submitted the “Fleur de Champagne” as well.
“This Brut champagne is convincing with its freshness and elegance. It proves again that there are still discoveries to be made in champagne - Lufthansa Discoveries, that is,” said Markus del Monego, Lufthansa`s grand master of sommeliers, who draws up the select list of exciting wines for the “Vinothek Discoveries”.
In the category of red wines, Lufthansa`s 1999 “Vesco” Nero D`Avola/Cabernet Sauvignon from Sicily took 4th place together with Thai Airways.
