American Airlines Issue Baggage Policy

FORT WORTH, Texas - In anticipation of increased holiday travel to and from cities throughout Latin America, Mexico, the Caribbean and various U.S. cities, American Airlines and American Eagle will implement a policy limiting the size and number of checked bags and prohibiting checked boxes.


The limits will be in effect between Dec. 14, 2002, and Jan. 6, 2003. During this period, American and American Eagle will not accept boxes checked by customers traveling to and from any destination in Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean. Additionally, passengers traveling to the following destinations will be limited to two checked items and one carry-on: Barbados; Bogotá, Cali and Medellin, Colombia; Caracas and Maracaibo, Venezuela; Managua, Nicaragua; Guadalajara and Leon, Mexico; Guatemala City, Guatemala; Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica; La Paz and Santa Cruz, Bolivia; Lima, Peru; Panamá City, Panamá; Port-au-Prince, Hait’; Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago; Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, and Santiago, Dominican Republic; Quito, Ecuador; San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, Honduras; San Salvador, El Salvador. Excess, oversize, and overweight baggage will not be accepted to these destinations.


Checked items should be no more than 70 pounds in weight and 62 linear inches in size—the cumulative measurement of the length, width and height of the item. Items for carry-on should be no more than 40 pounds and 42 linear inches.


Passengers traveling to Leon and Guadalajara, Mexico are limited to two checked bags and one carry-on effective today through Jan. 6, 2003. Excess, oversize, and overweight baggage will not be accepted. Additionally, boxes will not be accepted to Leon, Guadalajara, and Mexico City.


Excess, oversize, and overweight baggage will not be accepted on any American Eagle flights to and from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Passengers will be limited to two checked bags and one carry-on effective Dec. 14, 2002 to Jan. 6, 2003. Effective today through Jan. 6, 2003, Eagle passengers flying from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas, will also be limited to two checked bags and one carry-on.

From Dec. 14, 2002 to Jan. 6, 2003, boxes will not be accepted on flights from Los Angeles to Miami and Fort Lauderdale. This embargo also applies to Eagle flights from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau.
