Southwest Airlines Reports July Traffic

Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV)
announced today that the Company flew 4.3 billion revenue passenger miles
(RPMs) in July 2001, a 10.6 percent increase from the 3.9 billion RPMs flown
in July 2000.  Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 12.6 percent to
5.7 billion from the July 2000 level of 5.0 billion.  The load factor for the
month was 75.8 percent, compared to 77.1 percent for the same period last
year.

For the first seven months of 2001, Southwest flew 26.8 billion RPMs,
compared to the 24.3 billion RPMs recorded for the same period of 2000, an
increase of 10.1 percent.  Available seat miles increased 11.9 percent to
38.0 billion from the 2000 level of 33.9 billion.  The year-to-date load
factor was 70.4 percent, compared to 71.6 percent for the same period last
year.
