Southwest Airlines Reports January Traffic

Southwest Airlines Co. announced today that the Company flew 2,069.6 million revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in January 1998, a 3.9 percent decrease from the 2,154.4 million RPMs flown in January 1997. Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 7.2 percent to 3,835.0 million from the January 1997 level of 3,578.0 million. The load factor for the month was 54.0 percent, compared to 60.2 percent for the same period of a year ago.

Herbert D. Kelleher, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, stated: “Our revenue yield per passenger mile continues to show significant growth from year ago levels. Although January 1997 revenues were partially enhanced by the lapse in the ten percent ticket tax, January 1998 revenues showed good growth versus a year ago.”
