Qantas Chairman, Margaret Jackson, today announced the appointment of Dr John Schubert as a non-executive Director of the Board of Qantas Airways Limited.
Ms Jackson said Dr Schubert, who takes up the position on 23 October, was an outstanding individual with strong engineering, operational and international management skills, having served in senior management positions with Pioneer International and Esso.
He stepped down after nearly seven years as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Pioneer International in May this year following the merger with UK-based Construction Materials company, Hanson plc.
He was Chairman and Managing Director of Esso Australia Ltd, a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation, for five years from 1988, after serving as a Director for five years from 1983. This followed senior roles with Exxon and Esso in the US between 1979 and 1983.
Dr Schubert is a Director of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited and Hanson plc; Chairman of the Advisory Board of Worley Limited; a Director of the Australian Graduate School of Management Ltd (AGSM Ltd), the Great Barrier Reef Research Foundation and the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
Ms Jackson said Dr Schubert’s experience would complement the diverse range of airline and corporate skills of the other 11 Board members.
Dr Schubert said he was delighted to be taking up the Qantas role at a time when the airline was well positioned to respond to new entrants in the domestic market and to increased international competition.
