British Midland Statement Following Sale Of Ground Handling Business

Following today’s announcement that British Midland has agreed to sell its ground handling business to The Go-Ahead Group Plc t/a GHI Group, Austin Reid, chief executive officer of British Midland, gave the following statement:

The sale of our ground handling business, primarily ramp services, to The Go-Ahead Group Plc t/a GHI Group is part of a major business re-positioning programme at British Midland, in support of our ambitious expansion plans.

Our core business is in the air, carrying passengers to an ever-increasing range of domestic and international destinations. With the launch this year of transatlantic services, we want to focus our investment and resources even more closely on the core business of the airline.

By outsourcing our ground handling operations in this way, we are able to count on a continued high level of service support, from a business that will focus all its energies on investment in, and the development of, ground handling services.

A critical factor in the choice of The Go-Ahead Group Plc t/a GHI Group was that it shares our vision for the development of that business. They are committed to offering new development opportunities for the staff within the ground-handling business. There will be no redundancies as a result of this deal.

It provides a true win-win situation for customers and staff alike. The ground handling business will have the investment required for expansion and British Midland passengers will continue to benefit from the services of The Go-Ahead Group Plc t/a GHI Group long-term contract with the airline.

This is an important year for British Midland, with the continued growth of our European network and the launch of transatlantic services from Manchester to Chicago and Washington D.C. This deal ensures we can focus all our efforts on those developments, for the benefit of our customers.
