Alitalia : Preliminary Passenger And Cargo Results October 2001

In October 2001 passenger traffic, expressed in RPK, for the whole network of the Alitalia Group showed a decrease of 31.5% compared with the same month in the year 2000, on a 16.9% reduction in capacity offered expressed in ASK. Load factor decreased by 13.2 p.p. reaching the level of 61.7%. The overall number of passengers showed a decrease of 19.9%. These results have been affected by the recent events of the 11th of September, by the recent tragedy at Linate and the consequent safety measures adopted by airports authorities in case of reduced visibility.

Looking to the geographic breakdown, the intercontinental sector was the most affected. Besides the recent cancellation of routes to Australia, South and East African destinations, September has registered a strong reduction in Passenger traffic on the North Atlantic routes (-46.5%) compared with a reduction of capacity offered by 28.9% .The passenger load factor fall by 20.2 p.p. On South Atlantic routes the RPK decreased by 11.5%, the ASK by 4.4% and load factor by 5.9 p.p..

The intercontinental routes as a whole registered a 42.1% reduction in passenger traffic, with a decrease of 27.9% in capacity offered. The load factor went down by 15.8 p.p.

On the international routes passenger traffic, expressed in RPK, showed a decrease of 18% on a capacity offered, expressed in ASK, down by 4.7%. Load factor went down by 9.6% at 59.4%. This result is mainly due to the difficulties both on the EEC routes where load factor went down by 9 p.p. as a result of a reduction in Rpk by 20.2% and in Ask by 8%, and on the Middle East routes where load factor decreased by 9 p.p. as a result of a reduction in passenger transported by 9.8% and a decrease in capacity offered by 4.2%.

On domestic routes capacity offered decreased by 3.3% in ASK while passenger traffic was down by 16.1% in RPK with a decrease in load factor of 8.9 p.p.
Cargo traffic shown a 14.2% drop with capacity offered reduced by 15.3%. Consequently cargo load factor showed an increase of 1.0 p.p., compared to the same month in 2000, reaching 74.2%.

In the first ten months of the year 2001 overall passenger traffic showed a reduction of 9.1% in RPK compared to the same period of 2000. Overall capacity decreased by 8.5% in ASK. Consequently load factor was down by 0.5 p.p. decreasing at 72.8%. The number of passengers went down by 4.3%.

On the intercontinental routes passenger traffic decreased by 15.2% in RPK on a capacity offered reduced by 16% in ASK, with a load factor up by 0.7 p.p.. The international network passenger traffic, expressed in RPK, grew by 1.5% on a capacity offered increased by 1.6% in ASK, with load factor down by 0.1 p.p.. On domestic network the traffic showed a decline of 9.1% on a capacity offered reduced by 8.5%. Consequently load factor was down by 0.5 p.p..

From January to October cargo traffic decreased by 10.2% compared to the same period in the year 2000 The available capacity was down by 7.9%. Consequently cargo load factor decreased by 1.7 p.p..
