Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) today reported traffic results for the month of May. System traffic decreased 8.9 percent on a 1.7 percent decrease in capacity from May 2000. Delta’s system load factor was 70.2 percent, a decrease of 5.5 points from the same period last year. Domestic traffic decreased 11.6 percent on a capacity decrease of 5.0 percent. International traffic decreased 0.2 percent on a 9.9 percent increase in capacity.
The decline in system traffic is attributed to the continued weakness in business travel associated with the slowing U.S. economy and Comair’s suspension of service due to a strike by Comair pilots which commenced on March 26.
Delta boarded 9,235,223 passengers during the month of May.
