American Airlines Statement: GAO Report Concerning AA/BA

7th Jan 2002

The GAO letter was prepared specifically at the request of the Senate Commerce Committee Chairrman, Ernest Hollings, a longtime critic of all airline alliances.

Even so, the GAO paper was very limited in its analysis and its observations were qualified, recognizing potential benefits as well as concerns. Significantly, the GAO report did not recommend specific slot divestitures as it did five years ago on the previous application.

We remain strongly committed to our proposed alliance and look forward to government approval and the upcoming U.S.-U.K. open skies negotiations.
