American Takes Steps To Secure Cockpit Doors

FORT WORTH, Texas- American Airlines today announced that it has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval to immediately begin installing reinforcing bars on its cockpit doors. The company already has installed prototypes of the devices on an MD-80 and a Boeing 757. It also will install the device on all other aircraft types.

The new locking devices will be installed on all aircraft flown by American Airlines and TWA. The devices were designed by American Airlines` engineers working around the clock since Sept. 11 to meet the challenge of providing additional cockpit security. Installation on the entire fleet is expected to be complete within 30 days.

The company has designed the locking devices as a measure to immediately secure the cockpits while the FAA explores ways to further enhance cockpit security.

American says it is sharing its plans for the locking device with other U.S. carriers.
