Cathay Pacific Unveils `Asia`s World City` Aircraft

5th Jul 2002

Cathay Pacific Airways today celebrated the 5th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR by unveiling the “Asia`s world city” aircraft å- a livery design aimed to promote Hong Kong as Asia`s world city to the world.

The aircraft, which was parked outside the hangar of the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (HAECO), was unveiled by Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Mr Antony Leung, and Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive of Cathay Pacific Airways Mr David Turnbull.

The “Asia`s world city” aircraft carries on its fuselage the striking logo of the “flying dragon”, complemented by the brandline “Asia`s world city”. From afar, the dragon, which symbolises the spirit of Hong Kong and its people, is seen soaring over the green waves, which depicts the lands and oceans of the world.

“Cathay Pacific has always maintained Hong Kong`s tradition for premium service and style,” David Turnbull said. “We are proud that when our new `Asia`s world city’ aircraft returns to service tomorrow evening, Cathay Pacific will be carrying those traditions - and now the new image of Hong Kong - to all points of the globe.”
“From now on, people all over the world will instantly recognise that Cathay Pacific and the Brand Hong Kong dragon are part of Hong Kong, Asia`s world city,” Financial Secretary of HKSAR Antony Leung said.

Highlighting the significance of the 5th anniversary, 43 children born on 1 July 1997 banded together with the crew of Cathay Pacific for a singing performance of `I can fly`, a song which expresses the free spirits of the youth in Hong Kong.

The “Asia`s world city” aircraft was painted in its new livery at Taikoo Aircraft Engineering Company (TAECO) in Xiamen, China. The repainting process took 26 days and involved more than 30 people working around the clock. During the repainting the aircraft was also fitted with Cathay Pacific`s new First Class, Business Class, and refreshed Economy Class seats. Exclusively designed “Asia’s world city” fixtures have also been added to extend the “Asia’s world city” branding throughout the aircraft.

A special open day for the aircraft will be held tomorrow attended by over 2,000 underprivileged groups and Cathay Pacific staff. The aircraft will re-enter service with Cathay Pacific later in the day when it flies to Frankfurt as flight CX289.

As the airline of Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific continues to assume the role in promoting Hong Kong to the world. The “Asia`s world city” aircraft is the third aircraft for which Cathay Pacific has created a special livery since the Establishment of the Hong Kong SAR. “The Spirit of Hong Kong 97” was the first, followed by “The Spirit of Hong Kong - Millennium”. Each bore a design to reflect the character of Hong Kong and its people.
