June, 2002, JOHANNESBURG:. Ciao! Italy welcomes you.
South African Airways brings you Italy, the land of culture, art and pizza.
From 2 July we will fly you direct to Milan in Northern Italy, the business centre of Italy, from where you can explore the country`s many treasures.
Today, we celebrate with you the opening of this new route in true Italian tradition at the Monte Casino complex in Fourways, Sandton, at an Italian evening for our honoured guests from the Italian business community, embassy, tourism representatives, our shareholders and the media.
“Flying directly to Italy opens tremendous business opportunities for our passengers and presents a dream come true for us.”
“We promise to continue opening up new routes for you, our valued and most appreciated passengers,” said André Viljoen, SAA President and CEO.
From 2 July SAA passengers will be able to fly to Milan non-stop three days a week.
SA242 will depart from Johannesburg International Airport at 21h10 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays to arrive in Milan at 7h00.
For the return leg, SA243 will depart on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 19h45 to arrive in Johannesburg at 5h35.
“SAA decided on Milan rather than Rome for the re-introduction of its Italian route as 70% of the Italian trade takes place in Northern Italy. This means a greater cargo and passenger potential for SAA.
“Re-introducing flights to the northern part of Italy again confirms our commitment to tourism to South Africa. Northern Italy is one of the largest travel markets for tourism to South Africa. Italian tourists now have an easy way to get here,” said Viljoen.
