Response To Insurance Matters

21st Sep 2001

Robert Webb QC, General Counsel of British Airways, responding to media reports about insurance matters and the aviation industry, spoke on behalf of British Airways and many other UK airlines today and confirmed that:

The airline industry is in talks with the Government and the insurance community to ensure that all airlines and other airline service providers have adequate insurance cover not only for the protection of their aircraft, passengers and liabilities but also to ensure that their arrangements with the banks and lessors were fully complied with as usual.

The Government understands and appears sympathetic to the need for continuous and adequate cover: they and the insurers are responding rapidly and effectively to an unexpected situation. Talks are well advanced and we are confident that a solution will shortly become available.
