Ryanair, Germany`s largest low fares airline today (Tuesday, 4th June 2002) accused Lufthansa - Germany`s high fares airline - of cowardice. Lufthansa have failed to take up Ryanair`s bet to give away seats for free in the unlikely event that Germany would beat Ireland in the World Cup on tomorrow the 5th June. The best the Lufthansa spokesperson could do was “refuse to comment”.
Ryanair originally challenged Lufthansa to a bet that Ryanair will give away all seats on its 12 routes to and from Germany - on one specific day - to be confirmed by Ryanair in due course, at a fare of EUR0.00. The condition of this bet was that Lufthansa would give away its seats on one day for free in the unlikely event that Germany would beat Ireland in the World Cup. Lufthansa can`t take up the challenge, in just the same way that Lufthansa can`t compete with Ryanair`s low fares.
Today Ryanair`s Chief Executive, Michael O`Leary confirmed that Ryanair was not alone supporting the Irish team, but would also now support the German team as well.
Speaking in Frankfurt Mr. O`Leary said:
“Lufthansa can`t beat Ryanair`s low fares, and Lufthansa aren`t brave enough to take on Ryanair`s bet. However it seems unfair to me that all of our 1.5 million German customers should be penalised if Germany beat Ireland in Japan.
“Therefore where Lufthansa fears to thread, Ryanair willingly goes. We have decided to take up the Ryanair bet ourselves.
“So if Ireland beat Germany in the World Cup on June 5th Ryanair will give away all of the seats on its flights to and from Germany - on one day to be nominated by Ryanair - at a fare of EUR0.00.* Equally however if Germany beat Ireland in Japan on the 5th June Ryanair will give away all of the seats on our flights to and from Germany - on one day only - for free (a net fare of EUR0.00), on a day to be nominated by Ryanair.
Either way all of Ryanair`s German 1.5 million passengers stand to win. If Ireland win, so will Ryanair`s passengers. If Germany wins so will Ryanair`s passengers. The only people who will lose are Lufthansa. Then again Lufthansa can`t beat Ryanair`s fares so it is no surprise that they can`t take up Ryanair`s bet either.”
