Southwest Airlines Reports April Traffic


Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV)
announced today that the Company flew 3.7 billion revenue passenger miles
(RPMs) in April 2002, a 3.1 percent decrease from the 3.9 billion RPMs flown
in April 2001.  Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 3.7 percent to
5.6 billion from the April 2001 level of 5.4 billion.  The load factor for the
month was 66.3 percent, compared to 71.0 percent for the same period last
year.

For the first four months of 2002, Southwest flew 14.1 billion RPMs,
compared to the 14.5 billion RPMs recorded for the same period of 2001, a
decrease of 2.7 percent.  Available seat miles increased 4.1 percent to
22.1 billion from the 2001 level of 21.3 billion.  The year-to-date load
factor was 63.8 percent, compared to 68.2 percent for the same period last
year.
