P&O Cruises Sets Sail With Amadeus Technology

3rd May 2002

P&O Cruises
, market leader of cruise holidays in the UK has signed up with Amadeus, a leading global distribution system (GDS) and technology provider to the travel industry. It will be the latest customer for the Amadeus Cruise sales and reservation system.

From 26 May, P&O Cruises will, for the first time, have an online presence that will allow travel agents to check availability and reserve all P&O Cruises services via the web-based Amadeus Cruise system. In addition to this, Princess Cruises sister line to P&O Cruises, Swan Hellenic the UK leader in discovery cruise holidays and Ocean Village, the new informal cruise brand will also be made available via Amadeus Cruise by the end of the year.

Amadeus Cruise
will significantly expand the potential sales market for P&O Cruises by providing online access to travel agents across the country. Prior to now, travel agents wishing to book a cruise through P&O Cruises would have had to do so via a telephone call centre, which could be time consuming during busy periods.

Linda Scard, Customer Services Director of P&O Cruises said, “We have been working closely with Amadeus to bring our sales and reservations systems online. After extensive research amongst travel agents and in the market, we realised the importance of having a real-time online sales and reservation system. Agents are constantly looking for more efficient and cost effective ways of operating, and customers want a fast, comprehensive service. We have worked hard with Amadeus to meet, and exceed, both of these requirements and look forward to continuing to build our online presence.”

“In the UK alone, the cruise market is estimated to be worth £815 million per year. Amadeus Cruise provides both the cruise provider and travel agent with the technological capability to more effectively capitalise on this growing market,” Mark Lewsey
, Director of Market for Amadeus UK said. “Amadeus Cruise is the travel agents gateway to 90 per cent of the worldwide GDS distributed cruise capacity. We look forward to working with P&O Cruises to bring its sales and reservations systems online for the first time and to helping grow its sector of the market.”
